Conscripts in barracks starting March 9: What to expect?

After a hiatus of several years, Croatian barracks will once again be filled with conscripts for basic military training starting March 9.

Croatia is preparing to reinstate military conscription for the first time in years, with young individuals born in 2007 being called up to serve. The first batch, consisting of around 800 military conscripts including over 200 volunteers and 80 girls, will begin their training on March 9. Initial assembly will take place at three different barracks in Slunj, Požega, and Knin, marking the start of a new generation of the Croatian military.

The training program is designed to last for eight weeks and includes a rigorous daily schedule. Filip Tunji, a first sergeant in the Croatian Armed Forces, provided insights into the daily routine, which begins at 6 AM with morning hygiene, physical training, and education that continues throughout the day until dinner at 6 PM. After dinner, the conscripts receive some free time until bedtime, emphasizing both discipline and personal downtime in their military engagement.

This initiative marks a significant step in Croatia's defense capabilities, ensuring that the nation maintains a prepared and trained military force. The reintroduction of conscription not only fulfills military needs but also resonates with a growing trend among nations focusing on strengthening national defense amidst global uncertainties, indicating Croatia's commitment to enhancing its military readiness and capability over the forthcoming years.
