The Renovation of the Neris Riverbanks Begins in Vilnius This Year: Five New Bridges Planned

Vilnius plans to enhance the Neris riverbanks with five new bridges to create lively and accessible public spaces for residents.

This year, the city of Vilnius is initiating a significant renovation of the Neris riverbanks, aimed at transforming this area into a vibrant place where residents can comfortably and safely enjoy nature. Mayor Valdas Benkunskas highlighted the city's commitment to reviving the connection between the public and the river, ensuring the spaces will become lively, open, and accessible for everyone. The foundation for this transformation will be laid this year, paving the way for a better quality of life for Vilnius citizens.

Currently, a pedestrian bridge is being built between A. Goštauto and Upės streets, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. Additionally, the Užvingio bridge is slated to receive construction permits this year, while the design process for the Kernavės bridge will commence after an architectural competition. These developments indicate a strong push towards improving infrastructure along the river, which has the potential to significantly enhance public use of the banks and promote recreational activities.

Plans also include a pedestrian and bicycle bridge between Antakalnis and Žirmūnai, which is currently undergoing pre-project analysis, with preparations already underway for the necessary territorial planning documents. An architectural project competition is expected to be announced later this year, signaling a proactive approach from the city to foster community engagement and environmental enhancement along the Neris River. The overall initiative reflects Vilnius's dedication to public spaces that enrich urban living and strengthen the relationship between residents and their natural surroundings.
