FG reaffirms partnership with Catholic church for national development
The Nigerian Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to collaborate with the Catholic Church to promote national development and social cohesion during the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria's plenary meeting.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has pledged to strengthen ties with the Catholic Church in order to foster national development and peace. In his goodwill message at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria's First Plenary Meeting of 2026 in Abuja, Akume recognized the church's significant role in shaping Nigeria's moral and social landscape. He emphasized that the church plays a crucial part in the developmental efforts within the country.
In his remarks, Akume highlighted the Catholic Church's vast network, which includes schools, hospitals, and programs aimed at aiding the poor. He acknowledged that these institutions are not just vital for education and healthcare but are also instrumental in promoting social cohesion across diverse communities in Nigeria. This collaboration aims to utilize the church’s resources and influence as a means to address pressing national developmental challenges.
The government’s commitment to partner with the Catholic Church reflects a broader recognition of the importance of faith-based organizations in achieving developmental goals. As Nigeria continues to confront various socio-economic issues, this partnership can potentially enhance efforts towards sustainable development and enhanced social welfare for its citizens.
