NSC pledges support for power sector workers’ maiden NESI Games
The National Sports Commission in Nigeria has committed to backing the inaugural Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Games to promote unity and enhance the sports economy within the power sector.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, has announced support for the first-ever Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Games. He underscored the significance of this initiative as a vital platform aimed at fostering cohesion among workers in the electricity sector and invigorating the sports economy. The announcement came after a visit from the NESI Platform management, which is in charge of organizing NESI Week 2026, a series of sporting events for workers and stakeholders in the electricity sector.
The NESI Games are scheduled to take place from November 15 to 20, 2026, in Abuja, promising to unite various entities within the electricity supply chain, including generation companies, distribution firms, and regulatory bodies. Dikko emphasized that the NSC is prepared to offer both technical and institutional support to ensure the success of the event. This initiative aims to bring together diverse stakeholders, including government agencies and industry regulators, thereby strengthening the network among those involved in Nigeria's electricity industry.
By tapping into the potential of sports, the NESI Games intend to shift the public perception of the electricity sector, which is often linked to power outages and tariff issues. Dikko’s commitment suggests that the government recognizes the importance of building teamwork and a collective identity among sector workers, which could have long-term benefits for the industry, as it strives to address ongoing challenges and improves efficiency in service delivery.
