Latvian skier Eiduka achieves a high 12th place in the women's Olympic debut 50 km distance

Latvian skier Eiduka finished 12th in her Olympic debut in the women's 50 km event.

In her Olympic debut, Latvian skier Eiduka impressed by finishing 12th in the women's 50 km race. Starting with number 18, she quickly climbed to 14th place by the 7.2 km checkpoint and reached 13th at the halfway point. By the 36 km mark, she had overtaken Norwegian Karoline Simpson-Larsen, securing the 12th position, and attempted to close in on the top ten, which was only 54 seconds ahead of her at that point.

As the race progressed, Eiduka managed to reduce the gap to a trio of competitors fighting for 9th to 11th places to just 13 seconds by the 44.5 km mark. However, by the end, she lacked the energy to maintain the pace necessary to reach them, ultimately finishing 9 minutes and 13.9 seconds behind the Olympic champion and 23.5 seconds away from the top ten. The race saw a division among skiers into separate groups, with Norwegian Heidi Veng and Ebba Andersson taking a commanding lead and increasing their gap to the finish line.

Ebba Andersson made history by becoming the first Olympic champion in this new 50 km distance event. Despite Eiduka's commendable performance, the finish highlighted the challenges faced when competing on the international stage, emphasizing both the rigorous nature of the competition and the determination required to excel in such events.
