Attack of pests on mustard crops! Farmers in distress... changing weather has increased tension

Farmers in Rajasthan's Dholpur district are facing challenges due to a pest infestation on mustard crops, exacerbated by changing weather patterns and prior crop losses.

In Rajasthan's Dholpur district, farmers have reduced mustard sowing this season in favor of wheat and potatoes due to excess rainfall during the monsoon season, which led to waterlogged fields and the destruction of kharif crops. Consequently, the farmers are focusing more on crops like potatoes and wheat, which are currently fetching higher prices in the market.

However, the changing weather patterns have caused renewed anxiety among farmers, particularly with the arrival of aphids attacking the mustard crops. This infestation threatens to decrease the overall yield of mustard, which is critical for the farmers in this region. The agricultural department has noted that the total area sown for rabi crops in Dholpur is about 150,000 hectares, with wheat occupying 45,000 hectares and mustard sown in 67,000 hectares, alongside potatoes being sown in approximately 9,125 hectares.

This season's fluctuations in weather have not only affected the sowing quantity of mustard but have also reemphasized the farmers' need to adapt to the climatic variations. As they attempt to manage these challenges, the implications of pest infestations and changing weather could substantially impact their income and food security in the future, pressing them further into a state of worry regarding their crop yields.
