Bananas should not necessarily be put in smoothies – here’s why

Combining bananas with berries in a smoothie may negate some of the health benefits of the berries, according to a study from the University of California.

A recent study conducted at the University of California has unveiled that adding bananas to smoothies containing berries can significantly diminish the absorption of beneficial flavanols from the berries. Researchers found that those who consumed mixed berry-banana smoothies exhibited an 84% reduction in flavanols in their blood and urine compared to a control group. This surprising outcome suggests that the enzyme present in bananas directly impacts the bioavailability of flavanols when consumed together with certain berries.

The study's lead researcher, Javier Ottaviani, expressed surprise at how quickly bananas can reduce flavanol levels in the body, indicating a clear interaction between the ingredients that merits further investigation. Nutritionist Essi Lindeberg has reiterated the logical nature of these findings, underscoring the importance of understanding food pairings that can either enhance or inhibit nutrient absorption.

Flavanols are a type of flavonoid, classified under polyphenols, which are plant compounds known for their potent antioxidant properties. They are abundantly found in berries, and since flavonoids contribute significantly to the health benefits associated with these fruits, the results of this study highlight the need for careful consideration when creating smoothie combinations to maximize health benefits.
