A police officer was injured after her horse became startled during a patrol at Carnaboi 2026 in Manaus, Brazil, leading to an accident.
A police officer from the Military Police of Amazonas was injured after the horse she was riding became startled during a patrol at the Carnaboi 2026 festival, held at the Sambódromo in Manaus on the night of Friday, the 20th. The incident took place on Pedro Teixeira Avenue in the Centro-Oeste area of the city. Footage shared on social media shows the horse, named Tupã, lying on the sidewalk next to the injured officer while they awaited rescue, with another officer providing support and drivers stopping to observe the situation.
According to the Military Police of Amazonas (PMAM), the incident occurred when the horse bolted and collided with a pole, causing both the horse and officer to fall. The police officer suffered a hip sprain, for which she was treated and taken to a health facility; she is expected to be discharged on Saturday, the 21st. Meanwhile, the horse Tupã received veterinary care and is reported to be in good condition, currently being kept at the headquarters of the Mounted Police Regiment Colonel Bentes.
This incident underscores the potential dangers associated with mounted patrols, especially during large public events like Carnaboi, which can lead to unexpected situations due to large crowds and noise that may startle animals. The prompt response from both the police and veterinary services demonstrates a commitment to the safety and welfare of both officers and animals involved in policing duties.
