In Floriano, Piauí, a police operation known as Operation Porteira Fechada was conducted to address the issue of livestock roaming freely on public streets. This operation was prompted by a tragic motorcycle accident in 2025 that claimed the life of a 23-year-old man, involving a horse owned by one of the individuals targeted in the operation, identified as K.M.F. Law enforcement executed five search warrants in connection with this case and aimed to hold accountable those responsible for the dangerous situation posed by loose animals.
The Secretaria de Segurança Pública do Piauí reported that, in addition to K.M.F., several other animal owners, including a suspect known only by the initials G.S., were also under investigation for their roles in allowing large animals to wander unsupervised. Such practices raise serious concerns about public safety, potentially putting not only motor vehicle operators but also pedestrians at risk of similar accidents. The enforcement effort included the collection of documentation that might assist in proving ownership and the proper care of the animals, such as vaccination records and transit permits.
The judicial ruling requires those being investigated to provide proof of their animals' identification marks within ten business days. This legal action reflects a growing recognition of the need for stricter regulations governing animal ownership and public safety, in hopes of preventing further tragedies and protecting community members from the dangers posed by unrestrained livestock on the roads.
