Paraná Stream with Waterfall Suffers Environmental Damage After Sewage 'Overflow' from Sanepar Elevation Platform

The Ventão Waterfall in Umuarama suffered environmental damage due to sewage overflow from a Sanepar elevation platform.

The Ventão Waterfall, where the Veado Stream flows, experienced environmental damage when raw sewage leaked from an elevation system of Companhia de Saneamento do Paraná (Sanepar) on September 17. The local environmental agency, Instituto Água e Terra (IAT), confirmed the incident after inspecting the site in the northwest of Paraná. This event highlighted the environmental risks posed by sewage management failures.

According to Sanepar, a malfunction at the Guarani Sewage Elevation Station caused an overflow leading to a discharge of untreated sewage into the stormwater system. The company stated that such discharges fall outside the normal operations of a pumping unit, as it is not designed for final treatment of waste. Sanepar has pledged to investigate the issue further and take corrective measures to prevent future occurrences, emphasizing its commitment to environmental standards.

In response to the situation, Sanepar deployed technical teams to contain the leakage and initiated cleanup efforts shortly thereafter using lime and 8,000 liters of water. This incident raises critical questions about the reliability of sewage infrastructure in the region and its potential impact on local ecosystems, warranting scrutiny and heightened accountability from public utilities responsible for environmental safeguarding in Paraná.
