Poland Radically Changes Traffic Regulations – Driver’s License Permanently Revoked for Certain Violations, Imprisonment is Foreseen
Poland is tightening its traffic laws by permanently revoking driving licenses for new violations and introducing severe penalties including imprisonment.
Poland's police have significantly amended traffic regulations, expanding the list of offenses that can lead to the revocation of a driver's license. Previously, license revocation was limited to driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding more than 50 km/h in residential areas, and exceeding passenger limits. From March 2, 2023, the law will include revocation for speeding over 50 km/h outside residential areas, thereby broadening the scope of violations that could result in harsher penalties.
Additionally, new measures target drunk driving. Offenders caught driving while intoxicated can face confiscation of their vehicles, regardless of ownership, and face fines ranging from 5,000 to 500,000 zloty (approximately 1,184 to 118,387 Euros). These updates reflect Poland’s commitment to enhancing road safety and curbing reckless driving, as the government aims to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities.
The changes are part of a broader trend in Europe to adopt stricter traffic laws, responding to increasing concerns over road safety. By permitting imprisonment for hazardous driving, Poland joins other countries in toughening penalties for dangerous behavior on the roads, signaling increased accountability for drivers and a priority on public safety. This move could significantly impact driving habits and road safety culture in Poland.
