VSAT officers expelled an Indian citizen traveling from Riga to Vilnius
An Indian citizen was removed from a train in Lithuania for lacking valid travel documents, including an expired visa.
An Indian citizen traveling from Riga to Vilnius was expelled from a train by the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) in Lithuania due to the absence of valid travel documents. Upon inspection, VSAT officers discovered that he possessed an Indian passport along with a Latvian visa that had been canceled, which rendered him ineligible for entry into Lithuania. Following the train’s arrival in Šiauliai, the officers took him into custody and brought him to a VSAT border station in Šiauliai for further action.
Due to violations related to his entry into Lithuania and his transit through the country, a formal protocol was drafted against the Indian citizen, resulting in a warning. According to Lithuanian law, such offenses can incur fines ranging from 70 to 300 euros. This case highlights ongoing challenges faced by border authorities in dealing with illegal migration attempts, as multiple incidents involving illegal migrants attempting to enter Lithuania were reported within the same week, suggesting an increasing trend in illegal crossings.
The situation also reflects Lithuania's cooperative border management with Latvia, as several migrants apprehended while following a so-called 'Latvian route' are returned to Latvian authorities after necessary procedures are completed. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen border security and manage migration effectively amidst an uptick in illegal migration activities in the region.
