The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has announced an extension of its rain alerts for the 417 municipalities in Bahia, Brazil. Initially set to end on Friday evening, the alerts will now remain in effect until Saturday at 11:59 PM, with forecasted rainfall of up to 100 mm per day. This decision comes as residents are advised to prepare for potential flooding and adverse weather conditions.
Within these municipalities, all are under a yellow alert, indicating 'potential danger', however, 95 of those cities have been flagged with a red alert indicating they are in 'great danger'. Residents in these areas received emergency messages from Bahia's Superintendence of Protection and Civil Defense (Sudec), informing them of the alerts and providing guidance on how to respond effectively.
Over 600,000 residents in Bahia have been reached by these alerts, which included important emergency contact information, such as the number for the Fire Department (193). The situation remains critical, and local authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to safety instructions as weather conditions may lead to significant hazards in the affected regions.
