Locals create ice tracks across Estonia

This winter, locals in Estonia are establishing various ice tracks on lakes and land due to extended periods of sub-zero temperatures, including the longest tracked hiking path on Pühajärv.

As the extended cold weather continues in Estonia, local enthusiasts are taking the opportunity to build extensive ice trails across the country. This year, in contrast to last winter, the persistent sub-zero temperatures have permitted the creation of numerous ice tracks, enabling outdoor activities for the community during the winter months. Among these tracks, the longest known ice hiking trail has been built at Lake Pühajärv near Otepää, stretching over 11 kilometers, providing a scenic route for skiers and sledders alike.

Imre Arro, one of the trail creators, highlighted that the expansiveness of Lake Pühajärv offers an entirely different form of freedom and perspective during the winter season. He emphasized that the panoramic views of the surrounding nature, including wooded shores and islands, present a stunning backdrop for visitors. As people take to the ice, they are able to enjoy the beauty of the landscape along with the thrill of winter sports, fostering community engagement in outdoor activities during the colder months.

Feedback from users such as Margus from Tartu, who participated in the ice track opening, shows enthusiasm for the conditions and the experience. He shared his achievement of being the first to make tracks on the full loop of 11 kilometers. Annika, another sledder, also participated and noted the enjoyment of the scenery and activity. These efforts not only enhance local recreation but also contribute to the winter tourism appeal in Estonia, allowing communities to connect with nature and each other during a season that typically limits outdoor activities.
