Freezing Temperatures Lead Estonia to Inaugurate Ice Road Between Islands; VIDEO
Estonia has officially opened its first ice road linking the islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa due to freezing temperatures from the harsh winter.
Due to the extreme freezing temperatures induced by a harsh winter affecting the Northern Hemisphere, Estonia inaugurated its first official ice road on Sunday. This new route spans 17 kilometers and connects the islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa, which usually rely on ferry services that have been disrupted by intense freezing of the Baltic Sea. Current temperatures in Estonia regularly plunge below zero, with reports of lows reaching -15Β°C.
Drone footage captures vehicles traversing this ice road, which has been officially sanctioned by authorities, emphasizing its significance as an innovative response to the challenges posed by harsh winter conditions. While this is the only authorized ice route, numerous unofficial roads have also emerged, driven by adventurous drivers looking to cross the ice. For instance, a 7-kilometer stretch has been marked between the mainland and Vormsi Island, highlighting the popularity and necessity of such crossings during this weather.
However, local authorities have issued warnings about the dangers associated with traveling on these ice surfaces. A police officer, Maiko Sirts, cautions that while crossing on the ice is not explicitly prohibited, the thickness of the ice is not measured or guaranteed, making it a risky endeavor for motorists. The introduction of this ice road signifies both a practical adaptation to the winter climate and ongoing concerns regarding safety for those choosing to navigate these frozen paths.
