This winter there are several spontaneous ice roads in Estonia

This winter, Estonia has several spontaneous ice roads that see heavy weekend traffic, especially on popular routes between certain islands and the mainland, despite varying ice thicknesses.

This winter, various spontaneous ice roads have formed across Estonia, gaining popularity particularly during weekends. The most frequented routes include connections between Haapsalu and Noarootsi and between Vormsi and Rohuküla, where hundreds of vehicles travel daily according to the Estonian Police and Border Guard (PPA). The increasing traffic poses potential safety concerns, especially given that some ice roads are in questionable condition.

Among these routes, the connection between Hiiumaa and the mainland has been noted, with access points on both sides allowing for traffic flow. Female police officer Moonika Raudsepp has highlighted that while the ice thickness on this particular route is sometimes below 20 centimeters, dozens of cars still travel there on weekends, whereas during the weekdays, the traffic is significantly reduced. This highlights the varying usage patterns and the informal nature of these ice roads, which are primarily used for recreational purposes and transport.

As of now, the only officially designated ice road in Estonia is situated between Tärkma on Hiiumaa and Triigi on Saaremaa. This situation raises questions about the regulation and safety standards of such routes, especially as the region navigates the seasonal changes that influence the formation and stability of ice roads. As regional and agricultural ministers are also involved in discussions, it is likely that this trend will spur future debates on the regulation and proper usage of ice roads in Estonia.
