Police arrest fake military officers in Bayelsa

The Bayelsa State Police have apprehended two individuals for impersonating military personnel in separate incidents in Yenagoa.

The Bayelsa State Police Command has reported the arrest of two suspects for allegedly impersonating military officers in unrelated incidents in the state capital, Yenagoa. The arrests took place following complaints of fraudulent activities involving impersonation. The State Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Edebor, made the announcement during a press briefing, indicating ongoing efforts to combat such criminal behaviors in the region.

One of the arrested individuals, Kelechi Lazarus, was found wearing military camouflage and claimed to hold the rank of Corporal. He allegedly attempted to withdraw N200,000 from a POS operator by presenting a forged bank alert. When the POS operator did not receive a confirmation of the transaction, she wisely sought verification from her bank, which confirmed that no such payment had been processed, leading to Lazarus’s arrest.

The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance among the public regarding scams involving impersonation, as well as the efforts by the police to crack down on fraudulent activities. The Bayelsa State Police Command is likely to conduct further investigations into the matter to prevent future occurrences and to enhance public safety by ensuring that such individuals are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
