A woman has been sentenced to 30 days of conditional imprisonment for causing injuries to passengers when she fell asleep at the wheel of a tour bus in Iceland. The incident occurred on September 8, 2023, as the bus was navigating the main road south of Blönduós. The bus, operated by SBA-Norðurleið, was transporting a group of about twenty Akureyri municipality employees returning from an overseas trip when it rolled over after the driver lost control. Several injured passengers were subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Reykjavík for treatment.
According to the court's ruling, the driver had driven from Hafnarfjörður the night before and picked up passengers from Keflavik International Airport. Reports indicate that she fell asleep while driving, which led to the bus overturning and injuring multiple individuals. The court found her guilty of reckless bodily harm due to the injuries suffered by the passengers in the accident, emphasizing the serious nature of driving while fatigued.
This case highlights the risks associated with tired driving and raises awareness about road safety issues in Iceland. The outcome of this trial may influence future policies regarding transportation safety measures, particularly for drivers of larger vehicles such as buses, where the consequences of fatigue can be devastating for many individuals at once.
