Punished for closing on a woman and driving over her feet

A bus driver has been sentenced to thirty days of suspended imprisonment for running over a woman's feet after she was exiting the bus, resulting in severe injuries.

A bus driver from ÍS-Travel has received a thirty-day suspended prison sentence after causing serious injuries to a woman by driving over her feet as she was exiting a bus in Egilsstaðir. The incident occurred when the woman was getting off the bus from an Alcoa facility, and as she exited, the bus doors were closed and the driver drove off, resulting in her falling onto the street where she was struck by the rear wheels of the bus. Witnesses, including her colleagues from Alcoa, saw the incident unfold, highlighting its tragic circumstances.

In addition to the prison sentence, the driver has been ordered to pay the victim 1.3 million krónur in damages for her suffering. The severity of the woman's injuries necessitated her transport by air ambulance to Akureyri, where she underwent six surgeries and spent nearly two months hospitalized, followed by a lengthy rehabilitation process. This case raises concerns about safety protocols for bus operations and the responsibilities of drivers in preventing accidents.

This unfortunate event, which has gained attention due to its alarming nature and the impact on the victim's life, also reflects broader issues in the transportation sector regarding accountability and the importance of adherence to safety regulations. The ruling serves as a reminder for drivers to maintain vigilance and care, particularly when passengers are exiting vehicles, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
