Good news for 200,000 electricity users: prices will start to fall in spring

Electricity prices in Lithuania are expected to decrease by approximately 24% from March, providing significant relief to consumers linked to variable pricing plans.

According to VERT, electricity prices in Lithuania typically peak in January and February; however, starting in March, prices are projected to drop by around 24%. This seasonal trend is attributed to the increased consumption during the winter months due to prolonged low temperatures, which has historically led to spikes in electricity costs. VERT Chair Renatas Pocius noted that the decline in prices in the wholesale market is largely driven by the growth in renewable energy generation.

Experts recommend that around 200,000 consumers currently on variable electricity pricing plans should contemplate transitioning to fixed price plans gearing up for the upcoming spring and summer months, rather than during the winter peak. This advice comes as a strategy to better manage their electricity costs, taking advantage of the expected decrease in market prices, which would be more beneficial during the warmer months when energy demand tends to be lower.

Furthermore, there are growing concerns about the difficult conditions facing solar energy installations, as funding is being proposed for projects with quicker returns on investment. The average electricity price in Lithuania hit 152 EUR/MWh in January, marking a significant increase of 82% compared to December of the previous year. As these prices fluctuate, the change anticipated in March could ease the burden on consumers struggling with high energy costs during the peak winter months.
