Blocked by ex in Egypt: sentenced for adultery

A woman from San Remo has been sentenced to six months in prison for adultery in Egypt while being held captive by her ex-husband, who has a history of violence and stalking.

Nessy Guerra, a 26-year-old woman from San Remo, has been living in Egypt for two years with her young daughter, trying to escape her ex-husband Tamer Hamouda. Hamouda, an Italian-Egyptian man, has been previously convicted in Italy for violence and stalking. Recently, Guerra was sentenced by the Hurghada Tribunal to six months in prison on charges of adultery, a crime that is highly penalized in Egypt but nonexistent in Italian law. This marks the third legal case against Guerra for the same accusation, following two previous dismissals that were based on allegations made by her ex-husband.

The adultery charge exposes Guerra to severe consequences, including potential imprisonment and the loss of custody of her six-year-old daughter. The evidence presented during the trial reportedly included intimate videos and photos shared by her ex-husband, along with testimonies from witnesses who were allegedly paid to testify against her. Guerra asserts that these accusations are unfounded and intended to further control and intimidate her as she seeks to lead a life free from her abusive ex-partner.

Currently, Guerra has been able to secure her release through bail, allowing her to remain with her daughter while navigating the complexities of the legal challenges she faces in Egypt. Her case highlights the severe implications of gender-based violence and the legal disparities between countries regarding lawful conduct and personal freedom. As challenges remain, she continues to fight not only for her safety but also for her right to remain with her child as she confronts the legal system and the influence of her ex-husband.
