Delegate sentenced to more than two years in prison for stalking ex-girlfriend in Acre

A Brazilian police delegate has been sentenced to over two years in prison for stalking and domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend.

Luis Tonini, a delegate of the Civil Police in Brazil, has received a sentence of more than two years in prison for stalking and domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend. This ruling, made by the Criminal Court of Epitaciolândia on March 3, allows for appeal. Originally arrested in July 2023 for violating a protective order, Tonini’s actions included attempts to intrude into the victim's home, leading to ongoing legal repercussions.

Despite significant evidence against him, Tonini was acquitted of the charge of psychological violence, which raises questions about the legal handling of such cases in Brazil. The court ruled that his penalty would be served under an open regime, meaning he could appeal while still being at liberty. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay the victim a compensation of R$ 20,000, illustrating an attempt at restitution for her suffering during the ordeal.

This case sheds light on the issue of stalking and domestic violence in Brazil, particularly involving those in positions of authority such as police delegates. It highlights the importance of enforcing protective measures for victims and the broader societal implications of such crimes, reflecting on the need for comprehensive reforms in how domestic violence cases are handled to ensure justice and support for victims.
