e-exams starting in March will present a new type of tasks for students
The upcoming e-exams in Estonia will feature new tasks aimed at testing the educational system's readiness for a broader transition to digital exams next year.
In March and April, Estonian schools will participate in e-exams designed to introduce new types of tasks for students. Harno, the educational authority, has invited schools to register for these exams, which will assess both the schools and the system's capability to transition fully to electronic testing in the following year. The e-environment will alter not just the format of the exams but also their content and assessment criteria.
The e-exams will be conducted in the EIS (Exam Information System), which has been managed and developed by the Estonian Education and Youth Board since March 2025. They took over the EIS administration from the Ministry of Education and Research, along with a development contract signed with Askend Estonia OΓ. As of September, Harno will fully handle the development of the EIS, a system that has been operational since 2012, which allows for more control and flexibility in managing costs. The hosting of the EIS is set to transition to a national cloud by the end of 2025.
These changes mark a significant advancement in the Estonian education system, as they transition towards greater digital integration. Two specialists were hired to oversee the systemβs development internally, promising improved oversight and adaptability for future upgrades. The introduction of these exams and the strategic moves to enhance the EIS demonstrate Estonia's commitment to modernizing its educational frameworks to better prepare students for a digital future.
