The criminal process against the former rector of UACam concludes; he will leave Campeche
A judge granted conditional suspension of the criminal process against José Alberto Abud Flores, former rector of the Autonomous University of Campeche, allowing him to leave Campeche after being accused of drug possession.
José Alberto Abud Flores, the former rector of the Autonomous University of Campeche, has received a conditional suspension of his criminal process from a judge, acquitting him and his two collaborators of allegations related to drug possession in a minor variant. This decision allows them to maintain their presumption of innocence while confirming that there are no further legal restrictions on their freedom. They opted for this alternative resolution available under the penal code, which requires the approval of the Public Ministry.
Under the terms of the suspension, the legal proceedings will effectively be halted for six months, after which the case will be archived as completely concluded. Abud Flores’s attorney, Edwin Trejo Gutiérrez, emphasized that his client is free to live without any legal restrictions and needs only to await the six-month period for the official closure of the case.
Responding to inquiries regarding any admission of guilt, the defense clarified that the process includes a provision for accelerated procedures where, if accepted, it leads to different legal outcomes. In this case, however, no such admission has been made, thus upholding the presumption of innocence while the legal matter is put on hold, allowing the former rector to depart Campeche without further consequences from the allegations.
