Judge accepts appeal requests for preventive detention against Aquiles Alvarez and alternative measures granted to managers of municipal entities
The judge has approved appeal requests regarding preventive detention for Aquiles Alvarez and alternative measures for municipal managers involved in a corruption case.
On February 13, Dennis Villavicencio, the prosecutor from the Transparency and Anti-Corruption Unit No. 2, filed an appeal against the denial of preventive detention for six individuals involved in the Goleada case, including the mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Alvarez. This case investigates alleged organized crime activities related to money laundering and tax fraud that implicate a total of eleven individuals.
During the charges hearing, the presiding judge granted alternative measures to five of the accused, including periodic presentations and a travel prohibition for certain municipal managers. Notably, Pablo Pita, the manager of the Guayaquil Airport Authority, and Carlos Asanza, the manager of the Guayaquil Terminal Foundation, were among those subjected to these precautionary measures while another individual was placed under house arrest.
The prosecution's actions reflect ongoing efforts to tackle corruption within municipal administrations, as key figures from Guayaquil's local government are facing serious legal challenges. This situation not only puts pressure on local leadership but also highlights the broader issues of governance and accountability in Ecuador, as the involvement of high-ranking officials brings increased scrutiny to the integrity of public institutions.
