Operation of the Federal Police and ICMBio targets illegal quartz extraction in Northern Minas
The Federal Police of Brazil, in cooperation with ICMBio, launched "Operation Nascentes Livres" to combat illegal quartz extraction in Northern Minas.
The Federal Police of Brazil, along with the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), initiated Operation Nascentes Livres aimed at fighting illegal mineral resource exploitation in Vargem Grande do Rio Pardo, located in Northern Minas. This operation launched on Monday, October 16, involved the execution of four search and seizure warrants, as well as measures for the seizure and blocking of assets up to 6.4 million Brazilian Reais to ensure the restoration of environmental and property damages.
Investigations revealed that a single suspect has been involved in illegal quartz extraction in the region for about two decades, specifically in areas within the buffer zone of the Nascentes Geraizeiras Sustainable Development Reserve. Throughout this extensive period, the individual has faced administrative penalties at least 23 times due to environmental infractions, accruing approximately 3.9 million Reais in fines. Additionally, various police inquiries have been initiated against him since 2007.
The operation signifies a serious crackdown on environmental crimes in Brazil, particularly in sensitive ecological zones. By securing substantial financial penalties and legal actions against chronic offenders, the Brazilian authorities aim to underline the importance of protecting biodiversity and enforcing environmental laws, which are crucial in sustaining the natural resources of the region for future generations.
