Condition of lower road network deteriorating – funds first run out in remote areas
The condition of Finland's lesser-used road network is worsening, particularly impacting remote areas as funding decreases.
The essential lower road network in Finland is facing a significant deterioration in condition, particularly in remote areas where funding seems to be running out first. Despite the government’s ability to maintain major highways, the financial constraints threaten the upkeep of the lesser roads that are crucial for everyday travel, especially in northern and eastern Finland. Taavi Heikkinen, Managing Director of SKAL Northern Finland, emphasized that such roads are indispensable for both daily activities and long-distance transport.
The deterioration of these roads is not just a minor inconvenience; it is leading to concrete problems for professional transportation. Drivers are forced to take longer routes to avoid problematic sections, which in turn slows down traffic and increases operational costs. Heikkinen pointed out that this results in higher fuel consumption and emissions, highlighting the ongoing environmental impact. Furthermore, the rough conditions can cause damage to vehicles, prompting emergency braking and other safety issues on the road.
As a consequence of the deteriorating road conditions, even personal transportation is adversely affected. Jaakko Kyllönen, Managing Director of A. Kyllönen oy in Kuhmo, noted the delay in measures to combat slipperiness, expressing concerns about the safety of the roads as winter approaches. With rising costs and potential delays in travel, the urgency for better funding and maintenance of the lower road network has never been more pressing, especially for the residents and businesses that rely heavily on these routes.
