Preparing for a Major Flood: The Water Level in Plungė Sea Will Be Lowered
Hydrogreen plans to lower the water level in the Gondinga hydroelectric reservoir to mitigate flood risks this spring.
UAB "Hidrogreen", which operates the Gondinga hydroelectric plant, has announced plans to lower the water level of the Gondinga reservoir in anticipation of a significant risk of spring flooding. This proactive measure aims to prevent potential negative consequences for local residents, businesses, and the environment. By lowering the water level, the company seeks to ensure that they are adequately prepared for the safe discharge of floodwaters.
The announcement alerts the public to increased safety risks, particularly due to the unsafe ice that may form as the water level is reduced. Residents are advised to avoid walking on the ice of Plungė Sea and the Babrungas River, particularly downstream from the dam, starting from the afternoon of February 19th. This precautionary warning is vital to protect individuals who might engage in activities such as fishing, skating, or walking on the ice, as conditions could become dangerous.
While the flooding is looming, the efforts by Hydrogreen reflect a broader need for preventive measures in areas susceptible to flooding. As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, communities may need to adapt to more frequent and severe flood situations. Such proactive steps are crucial not only for immediate safety but also for future resilience against environmental challenges.
