Flood alerts in a stream called the harbinger of flooding – critical water level
Flooding levels have been reached in the Leitė river, known as a harbinger of spring floods in Lithuania, prompting alerts from local authorities.
The Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service has reported that the Leitė river, located near Kūlynai, has reached critical water levels, with flooding impacts already felt in the area. Andrius Jurkus, the director of the Šilutė District Municipality administration, confirmed that the Leitė river is known for being the first to flood during the spring season. This information indicates that certain sections of roads in the vicinity are submerged due to the rising water levels.
Leitė is specifically a river that runs through the Šilutė district in the Nemunas Delta, acting as a right tributary of the Nemunas River branch towards Rusnė. Starting from Stremenių village, the river flows south, turning west near Reizgiai and passing through various communities before entering Rusnė. With reports of four stretches of regional roads already being flooded, the situation is concerning for local residents and transportation in the area.
According to predictions by local authorities, there is a likelihood that ice in the Nemunas River near Rusnė may start to move by the end of this week, which could exacerbate flooding issues. Despite the concerning water levels, Dalia Drobnienė, the elder of Rusnė, expressed a cautiously optimistic view about the situation near the island, suggesting that current conditions may not be dire as of yet, although continued monitoring is essential as weather patterns evolve.
