Plunge Prepares for Flood: Residents Warned

The municipality of Plunge, Lithuania, is preparing for potential flooding by lowering the water level at the Gondinga hydroelectric power station and advising residents to avoid hazardous ice.

As the spring season approaches, the municipality of Plunge has taken precautionary measures in anticipation of significant flooding risks this year. The company UAB Hidrogreen, which manages the Gondinga hydroelectric station, has announced plans to lower the water level in the power plant's reservoir. This proactive step aims to mitigate possible negative impacts on residents, local businesses, and environmental damage due to potential floods.

Residents have been urged to exercise caution, especially since the lowering of the water level could lead to unsafe ice conditions on local bodies of water. A warning has been issued to avoid walking on the ice of Lake Plunge and the Babrungas River below the dam starting February 19. The municipality advises citizens to consider safer alternatives for activities such as fishing, skating, or walking to prevent accidents and ensure their safety during this period of increased flood risk.

Additionally, weather forecasts predict warm temperatures accompanied by strengthening winds, with the possibility of light snowfall in some areas on Thursday. The changing weather conditions may further complicate the flood risk and the safety of the ice, highlighting the importance of adherence to municipal warnings and preparedness efforts as the community braces for the upcoming challenges associated with the spring thaw.
