Ubatuba and Caraguatatuba register hotel occupancy below expectations during Carnival
The cities of Ubatuba and Caraguatatuba in northern São Paulo experienced lower hotel occupancy rates than expected during this year's Carnival.
The coastal cities of Ubatuba and Caraguatatuba in São Paulo saw disappointing hotel occupancy rates during the Carnival period this year, with Ubatuba registering only 74.5% occupancy from February 13 to 17, while expectations were set at 85.05%. This year's occupancy was also below the previous year's performance, which recorded 81.21%. The President of the Ubatuba Commercial Association, Adriano Klopfer, indicated that the weaker performance was part of a broader trend affecting the state, particularly in coastal areas.
Research suggests that the decline in occupancy could be related to increased family debt levels, indicating that potential travelers may be reluctant to spend on leisure activities. Additionally, Klopfer mentioned that multiple extended holidays throughout the year may cause families to reallocate their travel plans, detracting from the traditional Carnival influx. Observations noted that those who did visit the region also tended to spend less than in previous years, further impacting local businesses reliant on tourism during this peak season.
In light of these challenges, local business associations are looking into various strategies to enhance the tourism infrastructure and improve attractiveness in upcoming months. Efforts will likely focus on marketing initiatives and promotional activities to better cater to potential visitors, with the aim of reversing the recent downturn in tourism activity and driving higher occupancy rates in future holiday periods.
