Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba, in the North Coast of SP, register flooding and rescue of trapped individuals at waterfall

Heavy rains in the North Coast of São Paulo led to flooding and emergency rescues in Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba.

Heavy rainfall on Saturday night resulted in significant flooding in Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba, two municipalities on the North Coast of São Paulo. Emergency teams mobilized in response to the severe weather, which had already prompted alerts for heavy rains and potential flooding a day earlier. Notably, two young individuals became trapped in a waterfall due to the sudden rise of water, highlighting the dangers posed by the storm.

In Caraguatatuba, emergency services including the Fire Department and Civil Defense attended to significant flooding incidents, particularly in the Mococa neighborhood where calls for help surged between 10 PM and midnight. The rainfall resulted in substantial accumulation of water on public roads and even led to the flooding of residential properties. Thankfully, residents did not have to be evacuated, though emergency services provided crucial support to those affected, including assistance inside flooded homes.

During their operations, emergency agents also conducted monitoring of critical areas in the neighborhood to assess structural risks and determine the need for preventive closures. This incident raises concerns about the effectiveness of emergency preparedness in dealing with natural disasters, as well as the potential for increased incidents as climate patterns shift and rainfall becomes more unpredictable.
