HTV said that Dabro came from Belgrade in 1993; now they have apologized to him
Croatian MP Josip Dabro clarified that he did not move to Croatia from Serbia in 1993, and the broadcaster has issued an apology.
Josip Dabro, a member of the Domovinski pokret (Homeland Movement) in Croatia, has been the subject of media attention after a statement made during the HTV program 'Otvoreno' suggested that he came to Croatia from Serbia in 1993. In response, Dabro has vehemently denied this claim, stating that while he was born in Belgrade in 1983, he moved to Odžak in Bosnia and Herzegovina shortly after his birth and then relocated to Otok near Vinkovci in 1992. The clarification came after Dabro publicly corrected the record through social media, stating that the assertions made during the show were incorrect. The show’s host, Mislav Togonal, acknowledged the mistake and communicated this to Dabro, who has since received a formal apology. The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding personal histories in Croatian politics, especially in a context where the past can heavily influence public perception. This incident showcases the importance of accurate reporting in the media, particularly regarding politicians' backgrounds, as misinformation can easily spread and have lasting consequences on public figures' reputations. Moreover, it underscores the role of media outlets in ensuring accountability and the rectification of errors when they occur, particularly in politically charged environments such as Croatia.
