Sejong University's RISE Division recently hosted a forum titled 'The Era of AI Webtoon Ecosystems – The Future of AI and Creativity' on February 2nd in Seoul. This event was organized as part of Korea's Regional Innovation System Support (RISE), aiming to explore the transformative shifts in the webtoon industry due to the rapid expansion of AI technologies. The forum brought together a diverse group of professionals from academia, webtoon and AI-related industries to discuss changes in production structures, intellectual property strategies, educational curriculums, and practical applications of AI in the field, highlighting the growing intersections between creation, education, and industry.
As a significant platform for discourse, the forum also aimed to share the vision for the new AI Graduate School, set to be established in March 2026. This program is designed to nurture talent across various creative fields, including webtoons, animation, video, and virtual content, focusing on practical and research-oriented education underpinned by generative AI and XR technologies. The event featured key presentations from experts, such as Professor Han Chang-wan from Sejong University, who discussed the trends in Korea's content industry and the potential of AI webtoons as an alternative strategy, while other speakers shared insights into the production processes and the integration of AI in education for the creative workforce.
Among the highlights of the forum was a demonstration by Song Min, CEO of Onoma AI, who presented the AI model 'Quanta' specifically developed for webtoons, showcasing its real-world application. The discussions emphasized that AI webtoons could evolve beyond being merely tools for assistance in production, hinting at the creative possibilities and the future of interactive content in the evolving digital landscape.
