Carnival 2026 in Ceará is the least violent in the last 17 years; see data

Ceará reported the least violent Carnival since 2009, with significant decreases in various crimes compared to the previous year.

This year's Carnival in Ceará was marked as the least violent in the last 17 years, according to Governor Elmano de Freitas. The state witnessed a notable drop in various types of violence, including a 33.33% decrease in violent deaths, with 24 reported this year compared to 36 in 2025. The statistics also indicate a significant reduction in thefts and robberies, showcasing a safer environment for both locals and tourists during the festive season.

In detail, the number of reported robberies fell from 321 last year to just 133 this year, a remarkable decrease of 58.57%. Similarly, thefts also declined from 850 to 513, reflecting a 39.65% reduction. Cases of sexual crimes saw an encouraging drop from 22 in 2025 to just 9 in 2026, equating to a decrease of 59%. The trend continued with mobile phone-related thefts, which saw a 62.18% reduction in robberies and 32.1% in thefts.

While the statistics showcase a success in reducing violence during the Carnival period, it is also noteworthy that the event saw a hotel occupancy rate of about 90%, indicating strong participation and tourism.
