Lithuania has successfully received all 500 light tactical combat vehicles, known as Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV), from the United States, which was a part of a procurement agreement signed in 2019. The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense announced that the final two vehicles were delivered in mid-February, completing the order. The project began with an initial delivery of 200 vehicles, followed by an additional 300, marking a significant enhancement to the capabilities of the Lithuanian armed forces.
Minister of Defense Arvydas Anušauskas emphasized that concluding this procurement marks a strategically important phase in strengthening the army, contributing significantly to the development of national divisions and the deterrence of potential adversaries. The JLTV vehicles are characterized by high levels of crew protection, mobility, and versatility, allowing soldiers to operate effectively in challenging environments. This advancement not only bolsters Lithuania’s military readiness but also enhances cooperation with NATO allies, particularly within the context of current regional security threats.
This delivery showcases Lithuania's commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities in line with NATO standards and responding to regional challenges, particularly given the ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe. The acquisition is seen as a crucial step in ensuring national security and enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Lithuanian armed forces in various mission profiles, from peacekeeping operations to direct combat situations.
