More and more are stealing electricity

The number of electricity theft cases in east Denmark has risen significantly, with companies reporting losses exceeding 20 million kroner last year.

Electricity distribution companies Cerius-Radius reported a troubling increase in electricity theft cases, rising from 140 cases involving 9 million kroner in 2024 to 179 cases exceeding 20 million kroner last year. This rise in theft is impacting the broader consumer base of 1.5 million residents in East Denmark as those who pay for their electricity are ultimately bearing the costs associated with the theft.

According to CΓ€the Bay Smidt, the Functional Manager of the companies, these energy thieves often illegally tap electricity to power home features such as heat pumps, saunas, or jacuzzis. This behavior presents a significant challenge not only for the utility companies but also for compliant consumers who are forced to pay more due to the repercussions of such theft. The companies expressed their commitment to tackling this issue by working closely with law enforcement.

The collaboration with police aims to identify and address theft incidents effectively, ensuring that law-abiding customers are not unfairly penalized by those who choose to act unlawfully. As theft continues to rise, the companies are calling for more stringent measures and community awareness to prevent further loss and maintain fair pricing for all customers.
