More report missing refunds for electricity

An increasing number of consumers in Denmark are complaining about their electricity providers not refunding overpayments made in advance for electricity consumption.

Consumer complaints in Denmark regarding electricity refunds are on the rise, as the Consumer Ombudsman reports a significant increase in cases where consumers are not receiving refunds for overpayments made in advance (aconto) for their electricity usage. According to the Ombudsman, the number of inquiries regarding such issues escalated dramatically, jumping from just five in 2024 to 41 in 2025, and there have already been 25 complaints in the early months of 2026. This growing trend indicates a troubling pattern for consumers who expect to be refunded for amounts overpaid to their electricity providers.

The concept of aconto payments involves consumers paying an estimated upfront amount for their expected electricity usage. After actual usage is calculated, the intention is for any excess prepayments to be returned to the customers. However, the current spike in complaints suggests that a significant number of consumers are facing obstacles in claiming these refunds, leading to frustration and financial uncertainty for those affected.

The Consumer Ombudsman, Torben Jensen, pointed out that this trend could indicate systemic issues within the electricity industry regarding the management of overpayments and the refund process. As consumer trust in their energy providers is crucial, this situation may lead to further scrutiny and potential regulations aimed at protecting consumers’ rights in Denmark's energy market.
