Yu Seung-eun finishes 12th in slopestyle... a meaningful challenge for the first Korean athlete to compete

Korean snowboarder Yu Seung-eun finished 12th in the women's slopestyle at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, marking a significant achievement as the first Korean athlete to compete in this event.

Yu Seung-eun (18, Seongbok High School), a young snowboarder, participated in the women's slopestyle event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Livigno, Italy, finishing in 12th place. Despite earlier expectations after qualifying in third place, she struggled during the finals, collecting a score of 34.18 points. Slopestyle requires athletes to navigate a course filled with various obstacles, and while Yu had moments of impressive execution, crucial mistakes prevented her from reaching her full potential during competition.

Initially scheduled for the evening of the 17th, the final was delayed due to heavy snowfall in Livigno, leading to an unexpected adjustment in the competition timeline. Yu took to the course as the tenth competitor but faced challenges in all three of her runs. She started strong but stumbled on a critical landing in her first attempt, receiving a disappointing score of 20.70 points. The second and third runs saw further difficulties, ultimately leaving her far from medal contention.

This event marked a historic moment as it was the first time a Korean athlete participated in the slopestyle competition, which was only added to the Olympic program in 2014. Not primarily known for slopestyle, Yu expressed a desire before the event to simply complete the competition safely, indicating her determination and courage despite the challenging conditions.
