A backpack and personal documents of a missing passenger were found 70 kilometers from the shipwreck site of the Lima de Abreu XV vessel in Brazil's Amazon.
A backpack and a wallet containing personal documents belonging to one of the missing passengers from the Lima de Abreu XV shipwreck have been discovered approximately 70 kilometers from the accident site at the Encontro das Águas in Manaus. This discovery was announced by the Amazonas Military Fire Department on Tuesday, November 17. The vessel sank after departing from Manaus, heading to Nova Olinda do Norte, resulting in the rescue of 71 individuals, with three confirmed fatalities and five others still unaccounted for.
According to the Amazonas Military Fire Department, the findings were made during extensive search efforts along the Amazon River, where rescuers covered about 212 kilometers in a calculated search area of approximately 320 square kilometers. The backpack and documents were subsequently handed over to local authorities by technicians from the State Department of Social Assistance (Seas), in efforts to aid in identifying the missing passengers.
The tragic event has raised concerns about passenger safety regulations on riverboats, as the Lima de Abreu XV vessel was carrying many individuals when it sank. As search and recovery operations continue, the community maintains hopes for the safe return of the missing passengers while grappling with the unfortunate loss of life.
