The major player in Estonia's meat industry is laying off employees

Maag Eesti AS plans to lay off nearly a fifth of its workforce at its logistics center in Jüri.

Maag Eesti AS, the largest meat processing and sales company in the Baltic States, is set to begin a collective layoff process at its logistics center in Jüri, potentially affecting around 20% of its workforce there, amounting to approximately 25 employees. The company's communication manager, Kerstin Musting, confirmed that the layoffs will specifically target this site, which employs 123 people. The process is expected to commence in mid-March 2024.

In recent years, Maag Eesti AS has seen growth in its workforce, increasing from an average of 1,056 employees in 2023 to 1,135 in 2024. However, despite this overall growth, the decision to initiate layoffs at the logistics center indicates a strategic realignment within the company, likely influenced by economic factors or shifts in business operations. The company has been part of the Maag Group since the third quarter of 2023, which is under Maag Food OÜ.

The layoffs come at a challenging time for the food industry, and Maag's prominent brands, such as Rakvere and Tallegg, are under scrutiny. As the largest operator in the meat sector across the Baltics, these layoffs may impact not only the employees but also the broader community and economy surrounding their operations in Rakvere and Tabasalu. Stakeholders will closely monitor how this decision unfolds and its subsequent effect on the market and local job landscape.
