The Erased Star 'Jang Yeong-sil' Shines Again on Stage...Musical 'The Man in Hanbok'
A new musical creatively reimagines the historical figure Jang Yeong-sil, whose existence faded from official history after the 1442 'Gama Incident.'
The recently debuted musical 'The Man in Hanbok' at the Chungmu Art Center in Seoul strikes a balance between history and imagination, reviving the story of Jang Yeong-sil, a 15th-century figure who mysteriously vanished from historical records. Based on a novel by Lee Sang-hoon, the narrative intertwines modern-day characters, especially a documentary producer, with scenes from the Joseon Dynasty, focusing on Jang’s remarkable achievements under King Sejong's patronage.
The story unfolds as the characters trace Jang's whereabouts through unexamined historical notes and inventions that link him to notable Western figures like Leonardo da Vinci, suggesting a potential cross-pollination of Eastern and Western knowledge. The production employs rapid scene transitions reminiscent of film editing, creating an exhilarating pace that keeps the audience engaged, although some viewers may find the historical context a bit condensed.
Despite the narrative challenges, the central message of Jang, a former slave, overcoming societal barriers to pursue his dreams resonates strongly. The climax of the first act, showcasing Jang's escape intertwined with symbolic elements like flying devices and the creation of Hangul, offers a visually stunning and immersive theater experience that brings this historical reimagining to life.
