After a Freezing Cold Night, Snow is Expected in Many Places

Latvia experienced extremely low temperatures dropping to -26°C in the east, with snow forecasted following significant frost.

Latvia has faced a severe cold snap as temperatures plummeted to between -24°C and -26°C in the eastern regions overnight into Wednesday. The coldest temperatures were recorded at the Madona observation station, and similar lows were noted in parts of the Jekabpils area and Ludza municipality. The national weather monitoring agency reported that by 5 AM, temperatures in the western and central regions were between -10°C and -15°C, with some eastern areas experiencing lows around -25°C.

Weather conditions in Latvia include a gentle to moderate east-southeast wind, contributing to an overall good to moderate air quality across the regions. Generally, the skies are mostly cloudy, although some areas in Vidzeme and Latgale reported clearer skies. Snow is currently falling in the southwestern parts of the country, with varying amounts recorded; the snow depth ranges from 5 cm in Mersrags to over half a meter in certain locations like Dagda, where measurements indicate up to 56 cm.

In the capital, Riga, the weather remains overcast with a southeast wind blowing at about four meters per second, and temperature readings are between -11°C and -13°C. While the cold conditions persist, this sudden onset of snow following the frost is expected to impact travel and daily activities significantly, prompting warnings for residents to prepare for hazardous conditions and to dress warmly when venturing outside.
