Snow expected in many places in Latvia on Wednesday

Latvia will experience overcast skies with snow in some regions on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching as low as -26 degrees Celsius in the eastern part of the country.

On Wednesday, many areas in Latvia are expecting snowfall, especially in the eastern regions where the sun may shine briefly. A light to moderate southeast wind will transport cold air, with maximum temperatures anticipated to range between -10 and -5 degrees Celsius. In the capital, Riga, a cloudy day is forecasted with light snowfall and temperatures increasing slightly to a low of -8 to -7 degrees Celsius due to the southeast wind.

Meteorological influences are being shaped by a low-pressure system with atmospheric pressure readings at sea level ranging from 1010 hektopascals in the South Kurzeme region to 1019 hektopascals near the Russian border. During the night leading into Wednesday, temperatures in parts of eastern Latvia plummeted to between -26 and -24 degrees Celsius, based on data from the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Center and Latvian State Roads. The coldest temperatures were recorded at the Madona observation station, with similar extremes noted in some areas of Jēkabpils and Ludza.

By early Wednesday morning, the western and central parts of Latvia had temperatures between -15 and -10 degrees Celsius, with some eastern regions dropping to as low as -25 degrees. At around 5 AM, the harshest cold was documented in Madona and the vicinity of Zilupe, indicating that residents in these areas should prepare for potentially hazardous winter conditions. As the weather unfolds, maintaining awareness of changing conditions will be important for safety and travel plans.
