Dog rescued after being chained and without water attacks dogs at shelter in PI after trauma; protectors ask for help
A rescued dog, previously chained and mistreated, attacked other dogs at a shelter in Piauí after showing signs of stress from its traumatic experience.
A rescued dog, found chained without food or water in Parnaíba, Piauí, is exhibiting signs of stress and aggression at a temporary shelter. The dog was rescued after a police report following its discovery in terrible conditions along with another dog that unfortunately died during the rescue. The owner was arrested for animal cruelty due to the appalling state in which the animals were kept. Upon arrival at the shelter, the rescued dog initially calmed down but started exhibiting aggressive behavior where it attacked two other dogs, leading to one fatality.
After the rescue on Saturday, the dog was brought to a shelter by members of the Animal Defense Committee of the Brazilian Bar Association in Piauí (OAB-PI) and the NGO Adota PHB. The caretakers have pointed out that the dog was clearly undergoing severe stress due to its past mistreatment, which may have contributed to its violent behavior towards the other animals. The attacks occurred shortly after it seemed to adjust to its new environment, demonstrating the lasting impact of trauma on animals.
Animal welfare advocates are now raising concerns and calling for additional support and resources to help rehabilitate this dog properly. They stress that understanding the psychological needs of rescued animals is as crucial as addressing their physical needs, emphasizing the importance of professional intervention to help the dog recover from its traumatic past and to prevent further incidents in animal shelters.
