The devil crab, the dangerous crustacean that caused the death of an influencer in the Philippines
A 51-year-old influencer named Emma Amit died in the Philippines after consuming a toxic crab known as the 'Devil crab' while cooking live on TikTok.
Recently, the tragic death of Emma Amit, a 51-year-old influencer in the Philippines, has raised awareness about the dangers of consuming toxic seafood. Known for her gastronomic content shared on TikTok, Amit was cooking various seafood including the Zosimus aeneus, commonly referred to as the 'Devil crab.' During her cooking broadcast, she experienced symptoms of severe illness that led to her being hospitalized the very next day after developing convulsions. Unfortunately, despite medical attention, she passed away on February 6, having shown signs of severe poisoning such as blue-tinged lips.
The 'Devil crab' is notorious for harboring high levels of toxicity due to a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX). This substance is particularly dangerous as it causes progressive paralysis and respiratory difficulties by blocking sodium channels in neurons, which can quickly become fatal if ingested. The incident has sparked significant concern regarding public awareness about the consumption of such toxic seafood, especially in contexts where individuals may be unaware of the risks associated with certain marine creatures.
Emma Amit's story serves as a somber reminder of the potential hazards linked with food preparation and consumption in the culinary world, particularly when exotic or lesser-known ingredients are involved. This unfortunate incident highlights the need for increased education about seafood toxicity to prevent similar tragedies in the future, underscoring the importance of knowing what one is consuming, especially in live cooking scenarios where the stakes can be dangerously high.
