Social media influencer prepared crab for a meal – Died

Filipino social media influencer Emma Amit died after consuming a poisonous crab she had cooked herself.

Emma Amit, a 51-year-old Filipino social media influencer, tragically passed away following the consumption of a toxic crab known as Zosimus aeneus, commonly referred to as 'devil crab' in the Philippines. On February 4, Amit, along with friends, had gone crabbing on Palawan Island and shared a video of the meal preparation with her social media followers. Unfortunately, the crab, which is found in the Indo-Pacific region, contains toxic compounds similar to those found in pufferfish, leading to severe health consequences after ingestion.

Amit's condition deteriorated rapidly the day following her meal, as witnesses reported that she experienced convulsions and her lips turned blue, indicative of a severe reaction to the toxins. She was rushed to a local health center and subsequently to a hospital, but doctors could not save her, and she passed away just days after the incident. This incident raises awareness about the dangers associated with consuming certain types of seafood that are not adequately researched or understood, especially in regions where traditional knowledge about local fauna may vary.

The case has garnered attention from various media outlets, including The Bangkok Post and The New York Post, highlighting the potential risks of cooking and consuming seafood that may contain lethal toxins. It serves as a cautionary tale for influencers and their audiences regarding food safety practices, particularly when it comes to exotic or lesser-known species. The growing popularity of social media can sometimes overshadow essential safety precautions, leading to tragic outcomes like Amit's.
