Cold meals raise food poisoning risk โ Nutritionists
Nutritionists warn that consuming cold meals can significantly increase the risk of food poisoning and recommend eating warm food for better digestion.
Nutrition experts in Nigeria have issued a warning about the risks associated with consuming cold meals, stating that it can lead to food poisoning and bacterial contamination. They advise that meals should ideally be consumed at temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees Celsius, which is slightly above body temperature, as this not only enhances flavor but also aids in digestion and reduces contamination risks.
In discussions with PUNCH Healthwise, the dieticians elaborated that while cold food is safe if it has been properly prepared and stored, it can hinder digestion and be less satisfying than warm meals. The primary concern with eating cold food lies in the potential for bacterial growth when food is held at unsafe temperatures, which could lead to health issues if not managed properly.
Furthermore, the experts acknowledged that certain individuals with specific health conditions, like diabetes, might find benefits in consuming some foods cold, such as rice, to help regulate their blood sugar levels. However, they cautioned that these individuals must remain vigilant about hygiene practices to prevent foodborne illnesses, highlighting the balance between individual dietary needs and general food safety protocols.
