Figure skater Lee Hae-in advances to free skating in 9th place with clean performance... 'My legs were shaking, but I believed in myself'
Lee Hae-in, the 21-year-old South Korean figure skater, qualifies for the free skating event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan after achieving a clean performance in the short program.
At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, South Korean figure skater Lee Hae-in performed impressively in her short program, successfully advancing to the free skating segment. Competing on February 18, she scored a total of 70.07 points, surpassing her previous season best from the ISU Four Continents Championships by 3.01 points. This placed her 9th among 29 competitors, with strong performances from her competitors, particularly two Japanese skaters who took the top two spots.
Lee executed her routine to Christopher Tinβs 'Siren' and handled her technical elements with skill, including landing a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination and completing a level 4 flying camel spin. Her clean execution continued in the second half of her performance which is critical, earning a 10% bonus for difficulty. She finished with high-scoring spins and a step sequence, drawing loud applause from the audience and expressing her satisfaction with her performance.
This Olympic appearance comes after a tumultuous journey for Lee, who faced challenges including being unable to compete at the 2022 Beijing Games due to performance issues at the national trials. After winning a silver medal at the 2023 ISU World Championships, Lee cemented her position as the leading figure in women's singles skating for South Korea. Following a suspension in May 2024 during a national training camp, Lee fought a legal battle to contest the sanction and was ultimately able to compete again, making this Olympic event a significant milestone in her career.
