'Brisadeiro': Woman arrested for drug trafficking during Salvador carnival
A 24-year-old woman was arrested for alleged drug trafficking while selling THC-infused sweets during the Salvador carnival.
During the Salvador carnival, a 24-year-old woman was caught selling THC-infused versions of the popular Brazilian sweet, brigadeiro. The arrest took place in the busy Barra-Ondina circuit, a major area of celebration during the festival. Police conducted routine inspections in the vicinity of Avenida Almirante Marques de LeΓ£o, leading to the identification of suspicious activities around a stall selling sweets. Upon investigation, the officers found that the brigadeiros contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in marijuana.
The woman was apprehended after police discovered not only the tainted sweets but also a cellphone, cash, and a credit card machine in her possession. Authorities have emphasized the seriousness of drug trafficking, especially in places with large crowds such as carnival celebrations, where the potential for harm is significantly heightened. The operation was part of a broader initiative by the Department Specialized in Investigation and Repression to combat drug trafficking during large events.
Following her arrest, the seized sweets were sent to the Department of Technical Expertise (DPT) for analysis, where tests confirmed the presence of THC. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of drug-related offenses at large public gatherings and the efforts of law enforcement to maintain safety and order during festive periods such as carnivals.
